Which Refrigerant Do You Need?
Start with what you are servicing. A car, truck, or fleet vehicle always uses automotive refrigerant. A home or commercial AC system always uses HVAC refrigerant. The two are never interchangeable, and using the wrong one can damage the system.
- Servicing a vehicle built 2021 or later: use R-1234yf. It is the current automotive standard and required on most new vehicle AC systems.
- Servicing an older vehicle (pre-2021): use R-134A. Most cars and light trucks built before the R-1234yf transition still run on this refrigerant.
- Replacing refrigerant in a home or light commercial AC system: use R-410A. It remains the most common choice for existing residential systems.
- Servicing an older AC unit installed before 2010: use R-22, though supply is limited and a system upgrade is often the better long-term fix.
- Installing or replacing a new residential AC system: use R-454B. It is the current lower-GWP replacement for R-410A in new equipment.
- Working on commercial refrigeration equipment: use R-404A, R-407A, or R-448A, depending on what the manufacturer specifies for that unit.
- Not sure which one your system takes: check the manufacturer’s nameplate on the unit itself. It always lists the exact refrigerant type required.
